Summer concerts in Skálholtskirkja have been in operation since 1975 and hosted a concert at Skálholtsdómirkirkja in 5 - 6 weeks each summer. The festival is the oldest and also the largest of its kind in the country. Each summer, between 3000 and 4000 visitors attend the festival, but they are increasing every year. It can therefore be said that the festival is one of the biggest cultural events in South Iceland this summer.

One of the main goals of the festival is to promote the innovation of Icelandic church music. The first performance of the festival is 200, followed by all the major composers of Iceland. Most of the nation's most important musicians have come to work for the festival during their career, while numerous popular performers have been attending a summer concert home every year. The festival has established itself as an important music festival worldwide, especially in the music of the 17th and 18th centuries.
